What do we do when clients get angry at us?  What do we do with our own anger when we feel it in our sessions? Do we avoid it or can we leverage it to our therapeutic advantage?
Many of us started this job to help people feel good. It seems counter-intuitive for them to get mad in session;  and positively anxiety provoking to think of them getting mad at us.

Oftentimes we think of anger as one of the "bad" emotions because of our own history with anger as being something linked with hostile, aggressive behavior, or as covertly dangerous. As a result we often walk through the world trying to avoid people being angry with us.

What ways are you avoiding your clients feeling angry at you?
  • Not charging them their late cancellation fee?
  • Not increasing your fee?
  • Letting the session run over time?
  • Rescheduling at a time that isn't convenient to you?

What ways are you avoiding your clients exploring their anger in session?
  • Reframing things as positive before they can feel the anger?
  • Exploring how they feel sad when someone hurts them, but not exploring how they feel angry?

Without fully addressing anger with our clients we cannot help them move forward fully.
